Mayotte, Government

A prefect is appointed to Mayotte by the French government. The voters of Mayotte elect a conseil general (general council) to advise the prefect in the administration of the island. There are three major political parties. The Mouvement Populaire Mahorais (Mahoran Popular Movement or MPM) has traditionally led the campaign for separation from Comoros and for full incorporation with France. The other two important parties are the Federation de Mayotte du Rassemblement pour la Republique (Mahoran Rally for the Republic or RPR) and the Parti pour le Rassemblement Democratique des Mahorais (Party for the Mahoran Democratic Rally or PRDM). Mayotte elects a deputy to the Assemblee Nationale (National Assembly) in Paris, and a senator to the French Senat (Senate).
