waterpower, Andes, plants, potential

The electricity-generating plants in Chile produced 38.1 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in 1999. The fast-flowing rivers that descend from the Andes and the coastal ranges are potentially rich sources of hydroelectric power. Major efforts have been made to harness this potential, and by 1999 some 35 percent of Chile’s energy was generated from waterpower.
