Partidos por, Democracia, legislative elections, Chamber of Deputies, coup

All political activity was suspended after the 1973 coup and banned outright in 1977. Political parties were again legalized in 1987. In the 1997 legislative elections the center-left coalition Concertacion de Partidos por la Democracia (Coalition of Parties for Democracy) was victorious, winning 70 seats in the Chamber of Deputies. The center-right coalition Union Por Chile (Union for Chile), which included several right-wing independent candidates, won 49 seats.
