A campaign to reduce the high illiteracy rate in Ecuador was started in 1944; in 2001 some 97.2 percent of the people aged 15 or older were literate. Education in principle is free and compulsory for all children between the ages of 5 and 15. Many rural areas, however, do not have schools.
