Ecuador is divided into 21 provinces, which are subdivided into cantons and urban and rural parishes.
Quito, the capital, is situated in the northern Andes and in 2000 had a population of 1,615,809. Guayaquil, in the southwest, with a population of 2,117,553, was the principal port and commercial center. Other cities include Cuenca (278,035), an industrial and commercial center; Machala (216,901), a commercial and farming center; and Ambato (174,261), a resort area and a commercial and transportation center.
