At the 1990 census, Ecuador had a population of 9,648,189; the 2002 estimate is 13,447,494. The average population density is 49 persons per sq km (128 per sq mi). Some 47 percent of the people live on the Sierra, where the population is predominantly Native American. About 49 percent, mostly mestizos and blacks, live on the Costa. The remainder of the population is scattered within the Oriente and Galapagos Islands. The only significant groups of people of predominantly Spanish descent are in the cities of Quito, Cuenca, and Guayaquil.
