Accion Democratica, COPEI, Patriotic Pole, Democratic Action Party, political coalition

In the 1990s the leading political parties in Venezuela were the Democratic Action Party (Accion Democratica, AD), the Social Christian Party (known as COPEI), and Radical Cause. Smaller political organizations included the National Convergence and the Movement Toward Socialism. During the 1998 elections, candidates opposed to the traditional parties formed a political coalition known as the Patriotic Pole, led by presidential candidate Hugo Rafael Chavez Friasís Fifth Republic Movement Party.
